Sixteen years ago a had a bad scare during a family vacation at Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. I attempted to swim from my sister’s boat to the dock, probably no more than 50 yards. Halfway there I found myself struggling to maintain my breathing and had to ask for help for fear of drowning. Fortunately someone at the dock was able to throw a tube towards me. It felt like forever until I could reach the float. I recall the overwhelming feeling of relief when I was able to hold on to the tube and catch my breath. That experience gave me a fear of open water swimming for years.

I am not sure what gave me the notion to try swimming at the lake over a decade later. Well, actually, I do ….  it was my new interest with triathlon. I had done three pool sprint races but I wanted to step up to open water ones. With friends, I attended an open water clinic and while I still struggled with my breathing, I continued to practice at the lake weekly until I gained confidence and most importantly found my pace in the swim and complete a half mile.

Then I did something that surprised myself. With the excitement of Ironman’s impending inaugural Raleigh 70.3 race I created a relay team with two friends and registered to race. My goal was set. This began my 8 month journey to learn how to swim competently for a mile plus in open water. There were ups and downs to this journey but in May of 2013, I completed my first open water swim race and I was hooked on open water swimming.

Overcoming my inability to swim in the open water was such a gift. It has now been 6 years and LOVE getting out to the lake when I can.

Nothing beats the beauty and peace you enjoy when you’re in the middle of the open water. I’ve swum at sunrise and at dusk at the lake and intercoastal and never tire of it. I cannot wait to step it up even more in the future.
